HDTV on a monitor?

Hello there.

I currently have a 17" monitor which is attached to my PC and Xbox via a splitter box. I'm looking at getting a Dell Ultrasharp 2407WFP when it is FIANLLY avaliable.

My question is this: Will I be able to view HDTV on my new monitor? What new hardware will I need besides Sky+ HD? Baring in mind that the splitter box (AverTV box3) doesnt support HD.

In the final solution I want to be able to switch between computer, tv and Xbox like I do currently, if possible.

I hope this makes sense and thanks for your help :)

for HD you need a HD input and a HD output. The Dell 2407WFP is capable of HD resolutions at 720p and also has HDCP support over it's DVI connection. This article over at BeHardware might help you understand it a bit. I don't think it will work if you have the HD input (ie Sky+HD) going through a non-HD piece of equipment though, before getting to the 2407WFP. Something will get lost on the way

Hi,

First thing is that your monitor is supporting the 720p (1280x720 res). You may also look for the 1080i (1920x1080 res) ... and that is avaliable in the 24" (and larger) LCD panels range.

You will need some DVI & possibly ?! HDCP complaint switch. DVI-I stands for Digital Video Interface - Integrated and means a DVI connector that can transmit both analog and digital video data and DVI-I switches are usually more expensive. For example (as the general guideline):

(2 port is around £130)

... or 2 port DVI-D:

Single DVI output from that switch you have to connect to your monitor and other switch ports are for other inputs (Sky+ HD, your PC DVI ... etc). Sky+ HD box has HDMI out and you would also need HDMI<->DVI converters or cables. For example:

http://www.tvcables.co.uk/cgi-bin/tvcables/scan/ml=6/se=HDMI/se=to/se=DVI/se=Adapters.html

All in all, when you combine all the costs ... it's not cheap fun ;)
