Why do a lot of HDTV's have a resolution of 1366 x 768 instead of 1280x768? Surely this means that you will always have a letterbox view (black lines at top and bottom) when running in 720p? I just can't get my head round it though I'm sure there must be some kind of explanation  .

I believe it is because of the blurring between "computer" standards for resolutions and HDTV standards. 768 is common because of the XGA standard. 720p is actually 1280x720 not 768. As you move up through the resolutions, I guess they stick to standard computer resolutions as they have to be of a defined res for desktop use, whereas they know a TV will be able to scale stuff accordingly - it meets the HDTV standard as long as it has the minimum number of pixels required along x and y.

Edit: Why are you thinking about these things at 3 in the morning
