Hi
long story short: I am a video artist and I wanted to upgrade components of my PC to cope with real-time editing/playbac of HDV footage, but while I was doing my reasearch on the components, my HDD crashed completely because I pushed it to the limits with the HDV footage. Now I have no option but to buy a completely new system.
The PC will be only used for HDV editing with Premiere Pro CS4 and nothing else. Probably use Windows XP since Vista is unstable.
I've decided to buy the following components, so please let me know what you think (I am not a hardware expert!):
1.Motherboard: Asus P6T Deluxe Intel X58 (Socket 1366) PCI-Express DDR3
It supports the new i7 processors but I've read a lot of customers' negative reviews.
2.CPU: Intel Core i7-920 Socket 1366 CPU
Since it is very fast and ideal for video editing, image manipulation etc. The other ones of this series are very expensive.
3.RAM: Corsair XMS3 6GB (3x20484MB) DDR3 1600MHz 3 x 240-pin DIMMs 9-9-9-24 (TR3X6G1600C9)
4.HDD: Samsung 1TB 7200RPM 32MB S300 3.5" and Samsung 750GB 7200RPM S300 32MB 3.5"
These will be RAID 0 because of the demanding HDV footage. The 1T is for the HDV footage and the 750GB for the software. I've read that SCSI HDDs are more reliable and probably suitable for the video editing but just a few 100s of GB cost a fortune. Is it possible to combine a SATA with a SCSI as an intermediate solution?
5.Graphics Card: nVidia GeForce GTX 260
The 280 is relatively more expensive without offering equivalent additional power compared to the 260. I've also read great reviews about the much cheaper nVidia GeForce 8800 GT (but it was released in 2007)
6. PSU: OCZ 700W ModXStream Pro Power Supply
7.Case: Cooler Master Cosmos 1000
This comes up to around £1,400 which for me is a ridiculus amount of money, compared to what I had in mind. So any help/tips would be appreciated. At least I would like to know if I am making the right choice.
My general question is this: is the above system capable of editing/playing back HDV footage in real time?
