right, iv got a e6600, gigabyte ds4, 2gb geil 6400, coolermaster 650w psu

The problem is when i set it all up and turn the power on, nothing happens.
i just get a weird smell, it isnt the psu, and im assuming it isnt the board as its now the 2nd board iv tried and its still the same, could it possibly be the processor? the bios light doesnt come on, none of the fans work either

I have connected the 20pin atx connector as well as the 4 pin that comes with it, i also plugged in the atx 12v connector next to the cpu. next to the 121v connector there is a small cover with another 4 pins, however i have nothing to plug in there

It is really stressing me out as this has been going on for more than a week and i cant get to the bottom of it.

id appreciate any help

i also use the tuniq heatsink, it has a backplate on the bottom of the board, could the slight bending of the board when screwing the motherboard into place possibly cause this

Ive heard that dead cpus smell...

But if the cpu failed it would still power on, must either be the mobo or psu

If he has tried two motherboards and still has the problem, its unlikely to be the motherboard. My guess is, either the PSU is dodgy, or you havnt plugged in the power on / reset cables from the case properly perhaps. If there is power on button on the actual motherboard, try getting it to come on this way.

As for the strange smell, if you think it isn't the PSU, then I have no idea. Are you sure you're not just smelling the smell of sweet new hardware? :D

Good Luck

hmmm, it isnt the psu as iv tried it on my other pc, and i also tried my 2nd psu with same result. there is nothing in the manual about a switch on the motherboard.

iv tried the case cables both way rounds, though if it was faulty case connection, wouldnt a bios light go on when the psu is at least turned on

iv built pcs in the past and this is a first. its so frustrating as i cant get to the bottom of it

have you tried shorting the two pins that connect to the power switch on the front of your case form the motherboard?

ps do you have any leds on the motherboard which light to show you it has power?

i did something so stupid. in the rush to put my pc together i forgot to put the little gold screws into the motherboard tray.

instead i just mounted my board to the tray, thus making it not work
Lesson learned
