Dont think this is a medical thread & if it belongs in the Monitors section higher up please move it, but here goes.

Started working on a new job tuesday & spend 90% of my time looking at a PC screen, problem is they have TFT's that are all running at a non native resolution & to me look a touch blurry.

Noticed on tuesday that it was making my eyes feel odd like trying to read one of those joke birthday cards that are meant to look all out of focus, back there today & around 2:30PM i've started to get a headache, never had one in my life before, by 4:30 i felt like someone had stuck there thumbs into my eyes & i can feel my pulse in my head accompanied by a dull ache comparable to being kicked in the nadgers just not nearly as bad.

It's eased off now & i'm obviously still sat in front of a PC screen.

Is this just a co-incidence or could it be eye strain or something as the screen to me feels like it's out of focus?

Problem is they have all the PC settings locked so i can't change the resolution & dont want to look like a nonce by going & getting them to change it for a CRT off another department on only my 3rd day there.

Anyone?

TFT's running on non-native resolutions look awful :-/ I don't think it's coincidence, personally. Maybe you could have a word with your boss/tech-support/etc and tell them ? Other than that I don't think there's much you can do~

No coincidence I'd say it could be one of four things, you'd be best placed to know which ones to look into though:

1. Non-native resolution, although unlikely if your eyes are having to work harder they'll get tired and it can bring on headaches (even migraines).
2. Room lighting - hi frequency lighting is required in rooms with computer usage. If it's not hi frequency it can cause the screens to look like they're flicking slightly (although usually only on CRTs).
3. Contrast changes, dark/bright areas around the monitor that you're looking at so your eyes are constantly adjusting between light/dark - why they tell you never to use a monitor in a dark room for long periods.
4. Get your eyes tested !

It's still in the same building as my last job (technically it's just another department but on a different contract) & the lighting is pretty much the same, was using CRT's before though at the other end of the building, might just go in early tomorrow & try & grab another desk, see if it makes a difference.

My eye sight is spot on in one eye, but in the other eye it's pretty crap as it all looks like peripheral vision, in focus but it doesn't feel like i'm looking directly at anything, but like i say i use PC's all the time, we've got a TFT in the house & it never caused me problems.

ALSO: 90% of people run their monitors far too bright. It should be like looking at a piece of paper, not a lightbulb.

if your eye is messed up why do you not have glasses/a single contact lens?

It's hard to explain, it's not blurred at all but everything looks like i'm not actually looking at it directly i can see individual letters but put them all together in a long word especially one with repeating letters & half of the time if you asked me how many letters were in the word i'd get it wrong as i'd lose my place counting them.

Open notepad & type a line of text then read it whilst looking an inch or so below it, not directly at the line of text, that's what it feels like.

Always put it down to an operation i had done on my eye when i was little to correct a squint & thought no more of it.

Anyway, that's not the cause of this as i'm fine with every CRT ever used & the 19" TFT we have downstairs that is set up properly.

Yeh i always used to find my school monitors gave me migrains, and that TN panels in general hurt my eyes after long use. S-IPS on the other hand seems great :)

Constantly staring at an out of focus display will have a bad effect on your eyesight, since your eye is constantly trying to bring it in to focus. Sounds like you've got a bit of a history of it though. I'd try adjusting a monitor, and if things don't improve, see an optician. End of the day though matey, this is a PC forum not a GP surgery, see your doc if you're worried, don't mess around with your eyes.

I aint worried, it aint my eyes!

I just dont want to go make them get me a CRT unless necesarry as i'll feel like a pillock. And i've no history of it as i've never had the problem until today, hell i've never had a proper headache till today!.

(i know theres no chance of them being able to unlock the resolutions as it aint my companies system, it's a government system & government PC's)

Well I use a government PC everyday, have done for 5 years and I have been in three departments over 20 offices and never once have I not been able to change the resolution. (not worked, but visited)

The setting's are all locked on every PC, can't change the time, any graphics settings, nothing, can't even right click apart from in certain applications, can't even put Internet explorer in the start menu it has to be on the desktop which is a pain in the arse when you have 15 different windows & applications open allover your screen.
