Headlight issues on the road

I did a brief (very unscientific) survey on my way home tonight.
Of the 87 cars that passed me going the other way, 18 had a defect in one way or another. Either, one/both lamps aimed too high, one lamp out, or fog lights on. One lamp out seemed to be the most common.

So, with such a high proportion of drivers seeming not to care about this, why do the police do nothing about it? Surely it would be easy money sending out rectification notices and £30 fines to everyone. It also might drum in to people's heads that they should take better care of their cars.

Everybodys headlights are in my face now I have the 5. You tall cars should be charged 30 quid every time you blind me. :p

As for the OP I'd say it's fairly easy to **** people off with your headlights just by having a boot full of shopping/Office stuff/junk.

Get blinded so often by this. I often wonder how so many lights end up pointing at the sky, and how they have an MOT. Still don't even compare to barry boy blue HID kits fitted in halogen reflectors.
I would agree with 3 points and a fine for each dazzling headlight.

Even MX5 headlights are a problem in an Elise. :)

I don't understand why people have their headlights pointing to the sky as all cars with HIDs have to have some form of levelling (either headlight or suspension) and I can't remember the last modern hire car I had which didn't at least have manual levelling.

Didn't explain the previous driver of a Fiesta I had last year which had the lights set to their lowest position and it took me ages to work out why the lights appeared to be rubbish (the adjuster is behind the wheel so not obvious to find).

Alignment isn't checked in the smaller places I bet, just if they work or not.

It will be checked if they value their operators licence.

Every winter I see more and more cars with a headlamp out though, it can only be down to increasing numbers of ignorant or lazy drivers; surely anyone with half a brain can tell their headlights suddenly aren't working very well?

There also seem to be more people driving on DCW/Motorways who refuse to dip their lights, I reckon I see at least a couple of these every week on my way home from work. You only find out when you overtake and suffer retina damage.

It's even more annoying when it's a car you know is fitted with a headlight warning on the dash - so these muppets have ignored the BONG! HEADLIGHT FAILURE message and just left it..

I drive with my rear view mirror dipped almost all the time. I'd be blind if I drove an Elise!
An auto-dimming mirror would be a godsend.

Rilot- how many people didn't have their lights on at all? Very common here, brilliant when almost all cars are grey or silver :p

Possibly be that drivers can't be bothered to replace the bulb in the cold/wet weather!

My first car, KA, was a nightmare to replace bulbs in the best of weather conditions. Add cold shivering hands to that...

I however cannot stand having a bulb out! whether it be headlight or number plate... It'll bug me until I can get it replaced

My bulb has been out for a few days while I was waiting for it to arrive, it came this afternoon so I went out to double check I had the correct part and my hands were numb in under a minute. No way could I have changed anything, my fingers couldn't hold a thing.

Man up! :) Get some gloves or something. 10 minutes, then you will get used to it.

The other optional thing is tyre pressures.

The number of cars just in our street with one or more tyres partially deflated is ridiculous.

It's such a pain to change a headlight in my mondeo, I have to remove the whole lighting unit. Was so much easier in my older cars. Still I won't drive with a blown bulb.
