Headlight upgrade for A4(B6)

I saw 3 cars driving together with about 6 of those halfords LED strips on the front, a Punto, Corsa and Saxo. it looked absolutely ridiculous but gave me some laughs

Agree, the amount of cars with masses of LED strips plastered on the front (i.e non OEM) look hillarious.

I do like (OEM) DRLs, and I agree with their purpose (from my cycling hat on) that pedestrians etc react better to a prominent light. I always keep my front lights on my bike

Once you've bought the kit you already have the ballast (the small box that starts the HID gas) if you wanted to change the colour all you need is different bulbs and will work with the same ballast. Just make sure you buy the correct type of bulbs for the housing i.e. H7's, H1's etc. You can buy HID bulbs on there own cheap.

This is correct for the most part. However, some HID replacement bulbs are incompatible with certain ballasts. It can be a bit of a hit or a miss matching up bulbs to ballast connectors that although similar can in some cases be slightly different. Some sellers online are still selling Gen 1 kits which have slightly different fitments in comparison to Gen 2 kits. Because of this I would suggest buying replacement bulbs if needed, from the same seller you originally purchased a kit from.

Also, bit of an obvious point but bulbs designed for 35w kits wont work in a 55w kit and vice versa. They should be matched to the respective kits.

In terms of aftermarket DRL's I was thinking of the entire headlight rather than just the LEDs so it would a complete replacement. Still a bad idea?

As for the HID upgrade, I do like the white light appearance much more than traditional halogens, I will admit but it is also for the visibility. I always find visibility at night an issue. 6000K are still a tad blue IMO after looking at these examples:

5000K is what I am looking for.

Aftermarket headlights with DRL's will look ****. It wont make your car look like a 2010 A4. It'll make it look like an old A4 the owner desperately wishes was a new A4. Don't do it.

Thanks Fox ;)

Eurocarparts has 4300K replacement bulbs but not kits. Might go with the 6000K kits for now and go down to 4300K later if necessary.

Just buy a 4300k H7 kit from ebay, granted the quality won't be the best but it will do the job.

I upgraded mine using an expensive but very high quality kit, the bulbs and ballasts have been trouble free for 5 years.

I'm not sure how to reply to that one other than, yes.

You seem to be making something which is very easy into and incredibly long and drawn out process.

I appreciate the responses but a simple yes would have sufficed. You mention a cheap kit from ebay and then go on to talk about an expensive one that you decided to purchase. I'd rather not make the assumption that it was also from ebay but instead get confirmation.

If you seek clarification on a point then quoting only what you want confirmation of is better ;)

The kit i used wasn't from ebay, it was from a website which came recommended via several forums, i think it was Hids4u the quality was / is superb but it cost over £250, however the kit has lasted 5 years without sign of issue.

If all you want to do is 'add light' then buy a £60 kit h7 4300k kit from ebay, job done, don't mess around trying to buy one kit then other bulbs or trying to fit other front lights.

That's what I suspected and was looking for clarification on, thanks.

NP, one thing i would add is when fitting the bulbs and wiring into the headlight make sure you get a good seal, if you don't your lights will fill up with condensation.

I should've researched before I bought ....

I thought higher number = better (so bought 8000k kit of ebay for £30 all in - ordered it before I seen this thread :()

Still prefer them to the standard lights so can't complain for £30 worth.

what about something like these headlights from FK (they have projector lenses so wont dazzle other road users and will give a better beam pattern)

FK Headlights

And for the HID's themselves, get them from "HID'S 4 U" , i can personally recommend both of these companies having used them myself. Dont forget to get a CAN-BUS HID kit if your car has that system!

Hope that helps.

Rob.

They will look obviously aftermarket and cheap and tacky. No B6 A4 had LED DRL's and any B6 A4 with them just looks wrong - aftermarket headlights are just awful and cheapen the car. It is not a Saxo, do not spoil it.

The standard headlights are fine AND have a projector lense already so you can retrofit HID's if you wish. No point changing them for tat like that.

Didn't know they have projectors as standard, in which case the above lights are unnecessary... I will add that i would leave the DRL's disconnected though, if they're not oem (and sometimes even if they are...) they look terrible!

If they have projectors just go for a 4300k HID kit and be done with it. The colour is perfect, bright white that looks OEM and best visibility. You might need some modified bulb holders or cut your own for the HID bulb wires to pass through. Can be found for around a fiver on the bay.

The reason I am anxious over pulling the trigger and ordering them is the fact that I don't have much experience with dismantling the light and replacing bulbs etc.

Where should I put the ballasts?

I spoke to my local Audi garage and they will have nothing to do with it, not even replacing the headlights completely, they said that it's not something that can be done/they would do once the car has left them. Does this sound right?

HID installation seems fairly straight forward, remove the old bulbs, replace them with the new ones, secure the ballasts somewhere and that's pretty much it.
