Headphone Amps

Possible silly question regarding a headphone amp...far as I can tell, if I have a dedicated source I.E a cd player, can I then just plug the CD player in to a headphone amp and the headphones straight to that. Or do I also need a AMP and source, and THEN plug the headphone amp in to the main AMP? ..Hmmm..

I know it may sound like a stupid question, but I honestly dont know Thanks for any advice

CD player to headphone amp is fine. The amp will need a volume control but most do anyhow. They are frequently used with mp3 players and the like too

Thank you Thats what I figured. I cant use speakers where I live, they would be a waste of time, so I figured I could buy a decent set of headphones and a headphone amp with the money I would have spent on a set of speakers&amp and spend the rest on the source.
