I'm looking to get a fairly decent set of headphones for use at home and on the move.

I don't know a lot about what makes a good set of headphones and Sennheiser is about the only name I know!

Just having a quick look and these wireless ones looked good (though I am usually a wire fan :p) https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sennheiser...506422438&sr=8-3&keywords=sennheiser+momentum but do I need to go as pricey as that?

I'm going to pop into a shop this afternoon to test some out for comfort, as I think over ear will be more comfortable than on ear, but any recommendations would be good.

Sennheiser made a pair of £30,000 headphones. You'll want some closed back headphones for outside.

Wireless is lower in quality unless it uses the new bluetooth system. Corded means you don't have to bother charging the phones. Also you could use your own headphone amp, either portable or standalone and upgrade that way.

Just ordered said QC35's. They are £259 from RGB direct and I've just got John Lewis to price match, collecting them tomorrow.

Thought about the Sennheisers and the new Sony model but at £259 I thought I'd be sensible for once and get the Bose. (New version just released is the reason for the price drop)

He wants headphones for on the move.

so that rules out everything open. DT770's is the best bang for buck in that market. they cost around £80-£120 during price fluctuations last time i checked.

to get something say 5-10% better you would need to spend £250+ so they are the only ones worth buying IMO. however they are large and due to the comfy lining can get hot so not as good for extended use. maybe get an open pair for the house too? HD598's or K702's

I just picked up the QC35 myself today and am loving them so far, been unsocialable and using them in the office and it's amazing how everything disappears as soon as you put them on.

I too debated about the Sonys but having read about build quality issues I thought I stick with Bose who are pretty good with their customer service (if not I've got JL to far back onto)

The DT770's don't seem that highly rated over at WHF https://www.whathifi.com/beyerdynamic/dt770/review

I have noticed that sometimes, headphones (and speakers) highly rated for their flat response and studio qualities are not equally rated for the average consumer on the train who tends to want a sound more tuned towards bass or other frequency.

Have others found the same ?

One more observation as well, when looking at headphones, you need to be conscious of their impedance as some that may be suitable for home may not do so well on the road, requiring an external portable amp to get the best out of them

I kind of agree. I don't always take their word as gospel and try to look for other reviews in order to get a balanced view.

But I do think sometimes they get it right for the average consumer. Headphones/Speakers can be especially difficult to review as everyone has different tastes in the way they like their sound

the truth is closed headphones IMO are crap. you need to spend a shedload of money to get really good ones.

if you like bass then fidelio x1 or newer version x2's are great. not too bassy but the right amount. however they are open. they are the best all round headphones i have ever used and i own about £3K worth of headphones at the moment. and owned many in the past

I have heard good things about the Fidelios but apparently not so good on tubes, trains etc - the ambient sound tends to leak through apparently.

Have you used your ones in these environments ?
