Well, after returning some Beats Solo HD headphones, bought as a Christmas present from the missus, I find myself in need of a new decent pair of headphones. I understand that the Beats headphones aren't regarded as being that good, especially at that price range, with that in mind I'm looking for some recommendations for a new pair of headphones. I don't mind spending a steady amount of money (<£200) if its worth it, however if the benefit for the price is minimal I'd like to spend less :)

Over to you audio experts :)

*edit* I might add that they will just be used around the house, either plugged into my ipod or used with my laptop when I need to be quiet :)

Or the Beyer Dynamic DT770. Very popular closed headphone, particularly for its bass.

Sennheiser Momentums (quality construction, premium feel, very easy to drive and clear sound)
Sony MDR-7506 (best bang for buck, de-facto studio recording headphones all over the world)
Grado SR80i (open headphones, its has a marmite sound)
Sennheiser HD25-II (feels cheap but robust, flat response and neutral sound)

Used to own the Grado SR80i's and agree about the marmite sound... I also found the open back setup to be too restrictive for my needs.

Really hard to go wrong with a pair of HD25-II's

Recently I bought the B&W P5 headphones... Once they've bed in they sound great and they're very comfortable, not to mention the stunning design.

You can pick up factory refurb'd ones for £150.

Go for low impedance headphone as your laptop will not be able to drive properly a high impedance headphone.

Here's what Beyer has to say about headphone impedance.

Low impedance (up to 100 ohms): connection to mobile devices (MP3 players, laptops, etc.).

Medium impedance (between 100 and 300 ohms): connection to stationary installations (HiFi amplifiers etc.).

High impedance (over 300 ohms): connection to high-quality headphone amplifiers. Higher impedance = better sound = higher power requirements.
