Hey guys,

Im looking to buy my first proper set of headphones. I am thinking over ear which will predominantly be used for gaming. I am currently using some apple ear phones so anything is an improvement :D

I think i would like open backed? I don't know much of the benefits between the two but i dont really mind noise leak so if i do take them to the gym, that doesnt really bother me.

The budget would be under £100 preferably. I don't have a soundcard so would i need to get a DAC to power these? If so could you spec that too? This price can be additional but would rock if i could get both for combined for around £100.

Cheers chaps.

Well a good set of open backed headphones for gaming below £100, is AKG K612, but they might be a bit under powered connected to just onboard audio though. Decent DAC/amp as well would smash the £100 budget.

Sennheiser HD558 are currently £80 on the jungle site, and would likely be a better choice because they are more sensitive the AKG's and easier to power without an additional DAC/amp. Open backed too and while not as good a gaming headphone as the K612, are still a pretty solid choice.

Cheaper headphones again + DAC/amp are another option. Creative Auvana Live! are another good headphone for around £50. Could also grab either a sound card, or a DAC/amp, such as a SMSL SD793II for £40.

You might not mind the sound leakage at the gym, but everyone else will definitely mind. Your music leaks out just as much as their grunting and chatting leaks in. If you will use your headphones in public AT ALL, go closed back.

Somehow missed the use while at gym part.

As above, sound leakage works both ways. Closed is better if you're going to use the headphones in public as well as for gaming.

Creative Aurvana Live! would be a good choice. Decent headphones all round and closed back.

I didn't realise the leakage would be that bad chaps? I guess I better change up to closed back then. Amy decent recommendations?

Thanks

DT770 for use in a gym?

Good headphones for home use, but they're not a headphone I'd want to use in a gym. Too big, bulky and a 3M cable would be a real inconvenience.

I'd go for the CAL! if the headphones are to be used in public and at a gym, as well as home use. DT770, solely for home use, if the budget can be stretched a little over £100.

Lol

Missed the gym bit:p

Why don't you grab some decent open back headphones for home use and just use some crappy things for the gym. I don't know about you but when I'm training I really don't care about bass to midrange transition and vocal detail etc. Plus wearing phones you've been sweating in to listen at home won't be nice lol

Man them 770s are a sexy headphone. I know this has been asked before but will I benefit the open back or closed for gaming? I could just get some cheap ones for gym if I have too. I like these ideas!

open back is better for gaming as it produces a bigger sound stage, which makes the positional audio sound more realistic.
