We get threads every so often asking for advice on Web content filtering software (for the kids PC etc.)

I helped build a PC for a friend recently and was on the lookout for free/cheap software to keep it 'kid friendly'. I came across this:

http://www.k9webprotection.com/

Apparently, it uses the same filtering engine as the commercial Blue Coat web filtering appliances. In my testing it was every bit as good as Cyberpatrol (which I've used for a couple of years on the kids PC's at home), and has pretty much all of the same features. In fact, after a bit more testing I may be tempted to ditch Cyberpatrol at my next renewal. Only thing I'm not 100% sure of is how 'hardened' it is to the kids trying to hack around it, however it seemed to defeat my initial attempts.

And it's free too :)

Anyway - hope it's useful to some of you out there.

Great find mate, will have a look in to this. May come in handy at work as the kids are a little prone to straying...and out ISP's filtering isn't perfect.

Edit; if it's suitable for that kind of usage of course.

If by the 'kids' at work you're referring to employees - then it won't be free. Only free for personal/home usage I'm afraid. They do have commercial versions, but you obviously pay for those...
