I am using a pair of Logitech G35's at the moment, and for sound, I find them ok.

But when I have them on, the hum of my pc, sounds louder, then when they are off, if that makes sense ?

So my question is, what sort of headphones would eliminate this type of background noise ?

Should I be looking at noise cancellation headphones ?

Any advice, much appreciated.

That is more than likely electromagnetic interference from your graphics card being picked up inside your case and transmitted along the USB cable. Some kind of USB isolator should sort you out or maybe even an external powered USB hub.

Its quite hard to explain....

Its like, the noise of the pc \ fans, are being slightly amplified by the ear cups, when they are over my ears.

When I take the headset off, the PC sounds quieter ?

To confirm or rule out what rids57 said; does the PC still sound louder with the headset on if you unplug them from the PC?

He could be right and it's some kind of interference you are hearing that is being transmitted through USB, but the way you have described it though, it's as if outside noises (PC fan noise?) is somehow louder when wearing the headset.

If it's interference, that will go away if you disconnect them whilst wearing them. If it's somehow just making outside noises louder (PC noise), then that should still be the same even if they are not connected to the PC.

Also best to check what was suggested above as well, about hearing what the microphone hears through the headphones, just to rule it out. I doubt it is that though, as if it were that, you'd hear other noises picked up by the microphone as well, like when you are using keyboard and mouse, etc. As you haven't mentioned hearing that, it's unlikely that's the cause.

With the headphones unplugged, the fan noise still sounds
louder then when not wearing the headphones.

When the pc is idle, there isn't much difference in noise, but the when the fans ramp up a little in a gaming session, then you can hear the difference.

Even though the fans don't sound that loud, when you take the headphones off.

Maybe its an acoustic thing ?

Thanks, for the suggestions, maybe I just need some better quality headphones, or I need to get my ears looked at :)

That sounds like some kind of acoustic anomaly and one I've never heard of before :D

With the headphones unplugged, they won't be getting any power through the USB so should be about the same as ear muffs.

Its probably my ears then....hahaha.

Its still a great excuse to treat myself to a new headset though :D
