Good day to everyone :)

I am curremtly trying to find a 5.1 gaming headset that will work with both the Xbox 360 & the PS3 and I am in need of advice and guidance. Ive found this headset by my most favourite of peripheral makes Razer

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=SP-017-RA&groupid=702&catid=1058&subcat=

Now it doesnt mention the PS3 BUT Im thinking that as it uses an optical connection just like my 5.1 creatie speaker system does it should still plug in and work with the PS3. Would this be correct? If so Ill just get this set unless someone can advise on better.

PS: I dont want to be faffing around with amps and seperate headsets as I want an easy to set up solution with as few boxes and cables as possible and my budget is around £160 and they can be wireless or wired Im no fussed about that

5.1 headsets are a waste of money. They sound tinny and crap and don't reproduce surround very well. Infact as it will be coming out of a stereo jack it won't be in surround at all.

If you need a mic look at the PC360s, if you don't and are open to a seperate mic then theres loads of options. HD595s, DT770, DT990s.

Don't fall for the marketing jargon of 5.1 headsets. It can be done but you neeed to mess around with amps and stuff.

But there are so many reiews which say the Razer headset has excellent sound quality and that unlike most headsets the 5.1 actually works and sounds great. Im confused lol.

Astro mixamp + PC360. Can't be beaten.

This.

I went for the mixamp and the AD700's because at the time they were cheaper than the PC360's. I used some Turtle Beach ones before that and, although at the time I felt that they were good, there really is no comparison.

I don't use my mixamp anymore as later on I bought an Onkyo amp which I just plug the 700's straight into.

The link given here is what made my decision for me (it is an excellent read). Informed knowledge is priceless when you want the best for your buck.

The Razer won't come anywhere near this quality.

logitech make a beast of a headset

granted it's not 5.1, but it can work with the 360 and ps3 simultaneously (no need to disconnect from one to the other, you just push a button on the headset.

it is also wireless.

it can also be used with your pc too simultaneously (supports up to 3 devies at the same time).

the major problem is the price, luckily i managed to get it whilst it was on sale and had a 40% voucher and got a free game with it which i also sold on, meaning it only cost me around £60, cant remember exactly how much now.

Money is right but good luck getting anything decent without "faffing" (basically mirroring what Kreeee said)

PC360 can be had for £100, the mixamp can be had for £50-70. Under your budget, or just over (you said around).

No amp is a stupid choice, as it's no different to a combined system with an in-line amp.

spending £150 on a headset is a bit much though, unless you buy a pair of decent headphones and seperate mic, so you can then use the headphones with an mp3 player, etc as well.

that would be a much better use of that sort of cash.

but it seems like you want the razer, so just go and buy that and give us a review afterwards

I think the op will be pleasant surprised with the faffing this unit will give.

It has a unit with it larger then the mixamp

The headset uses rechargeable batteries so your gaming time is dictated by it coupled with the fact that these will deteriorate over time.

The only faff saving between this unit and a wireless mixamp is umm nothing

The only faff saving between this unit and the wired mixamp is the headphone cable.

But hey who am I to give any advice it's your money.
