Important health warning for contact lens wearers

Just received an official letter from my opticians in the post but those who order their lenses independantly from the internet may not know of the problem...

this is for those who use the Renu Moistureloc solution to store/clean their lenses. Bausch and Lomb the manufacturers have decided to recall this product as there is a link between its use and a rare eye condition called Fusarium keratitis.

Article from D&A

more information here

"Symptoms of a Fusarium infection include redness, pain, tearing, increased light sensitivity, blurry vision, discharge and swelling. If you experience any of these symptoms, remove your contact lenses immediately and consult your eye care professional."

whether you have the symptoms or not, if you are using the solution the advice i was given was to stop using it immediately and contact your opticians. Bausch and Lomb have said as part of my subscription (with D&A) i'll get a free replacement.

Optifree Express > *

My sister was on the ReNu stuff. She's obviously seen the light, and moved on Optifree.

I only have daily disposibles, that way there is no chance of cleaning problems.
yeah same here. its also because i dont trust myself keeping them clean and also im lazy. :p

Just come home from work to receive my letter, means I'm gonna have to spend the weekend in my specs :(.

I don't mind wearing them at all, have been since I was 6 but I prefer hitting the tiles in my lenses.

D&A said they'd send out some alternative solution ASAP but is there some I can use in the meantime?

afraid not. you could pop into a supermarket/chemist and pick up some generic cleaning solution but just make sure its the right type of solution for your lenses i.e. soft lens, cleaning/storage, all-in-one etc.

whatever you do, DO NOT use water to clean your lenses - its the worst you can do as water contains microbes which if enters your eye through a small scratch on the surface will mean big trouble :(

old news, i heard about this back in mid February whilst out in HK, according to the HK health authority there's no direct link with the product causing the infections, it was only noted that the majority of people contracting this infection used RENU (Renu being the most popular all in one solution in the far east).

edit. i'm still using renu and have done for the last 4years and don't intend to change

Hmm... that's annoying, will be spit polishing them for a couple of days then.

Never used water as my optician told me not to, although I never knew why until now.

Focus Dailys = winnorx :D

i don't trust myself looking after something for a whole month :p and keeping it clean for that matter :D
