Hey all , basically as per the topic, I have played a lot of Hearts of Iron IV and a few mods. I'm wondering if there is any newer game out there that is a war game RTS like HOI 4 but as good or better ?

I feel like i've done it to death now and fancy something else.
Thanks for any suggestions.

For pure WW2 rts there is Sudden Strike 4, but is RTS not grand strategy like HOI4

Tactical Grand Strategy games like HOI4 don't exist. Similarly Stellaris, EU4, CK2, Imperator, Victoria 2 are all unique Grand Strategy games.

Mentioned Vicky 2 because is part HOI3-4, part EU4 and a big part trying to learn Satawalese. :D

Later in the month it will be with 75% discount during PDXCon (18-20 Oct)

Thanks for that. Was hoping there would be some cool new one out but I will look into these other games.

Cheers

Unfortunately there aren't many games like HOI4 and is one of my favourite games. Especially when tinkering with weapons, armour, tactics & compositions.

A bit controversial but how about HoI 3? I have not played HoI4 at all but have played 3 a lot, and to be honest, looking at youtube vids, the games seem to be *completely* different animals. So much so I am actually completely put off by the look of how 4 plays compared to 3, and will probably never buy it. The main reason being it looks so dumbed down in comparison. I would be fascinated by the views of someone going the other way from 4 to 3. Obviously doesn't meet with your newer requirement though.

HOI3 puts you as a commander of the army. HOI4 you are the leader of the country. So you have control of how things are produced, in addition to armies & division compositions.
You can make different infantry divisions, of different battalions and assign them to different armies for different tactics for defense, offense, if supplies will be low zone. Or make some Space Marines divisions. (aka infantry battalions with 1 heavy tank and artillery).

Same applies to mechanised & armoured division of different composition for different theaters and warzones. (light tanks, destroyers, med, heavy tanks, AA)
Then there is tech, navies (last DLC) which you can go wild with making fleets & forces for different roles (mine laying, raiding you name it).

And yes you can play everyone in relation to WW2, even the one figure that on the German version of the game is blacked out..... :p

I've put hundreds of hours into HoI3 and loved it - whereas HoI4 has seen less then 30 hours. I really don't like it all that much and part of that is because there is a whole level of tactical gameplay that is lost in 4 (I know you can micromanage each unit if you want, but the very design of the game doesn't want you to do that.)

So I just go back to EUIV instead. ;)
