Reckon it's a good idea just to go down the night before and sleep in the airport, with a view to avoiding an expensive one night stay over?

I'm guessing you need to check in about 4am then?
Just stay awake looking at the international totty in the terminal, then sleep on the plane :]

Well, a taxi ride from here is about £150. Would rather not pay that.

Stay up all night. Its easy.

Sleep on the plane IF you can. Or just keep drinking coffee and feel a little crazy for a bit. Get to your destination, get drunk and pass out until the next afternoon.

Last time i had a 6am flight we got to the airport the night before and just stayed up all night. All the seats/sofas/comfy spots get taken early, so either sleep on the hard floor, or stay up.
