Heating only working at high revs?

Hey guys,

Got a strange problem here that started yesterday after I came out of work.

My heating only works at high revs, the higher they are the hotter it gets (tested by sitting at idle and gently raising the revs to about 5k, where it was really really hot on "Full" heat, yet it returned to cold seconds after it dropping back to 1k.)

My first guess is a coolant problem, so it's in getting that changed and checked for leaks (it was running a lot lower than it was last week, and there is a puddle of what i assume is coolant on top of the gearbox.

It's in the garage now getting a coolant change and a leak test to find where the leak is....do you think the problems are directly related though? If not, what do you think could be causing it?

Tom.

coolant leak causing an air lock, or the water pump is failing and can therefore only shift water at higher rpm.

blocked matrix, give it a coolant flush and try again.

leave it idling without the heater on, wait for the engine to get then turn on the heater full blast, if it starts hot then goes cold its a blocked matrix.

hopefully it's not the water pump as its only a few months old! brand new metal bladed one.

The coolant leak causing an airlock is one that ive heard a few times, or a blocked heater matrix...with them doing a full flush it should be all good if the leak is fixed too :)

omfg. i can't believe it :( :( :(

It is indeed leaking coolant.....through the ******* headgasket!!!

now to think what i'm gonna do with it :| the garage who have it atm want £700 to change the head gasket, which they can go whistle for, i know it's a DIY'able job just time consuming. He said it's not bad enough to have done any damage yet, so hopefully no reworking the head :x

NeedMoreSpeed.....how long did it take you and your dad to do yours?

GAH.

Tom.

could you not just get another engine? i thought you paid peanuts for the brand new unit you later sold on?

not quite peanuts, and again, the part cost is not a problem, it's labour. Cost nearly a grand to fit the engine.

if you do it yourself make sure you get the head checked and skimmed if need be, iam tired of putting headjob's right by diy'ers who simply slap a new gasket in while moaning about how much garages charge.

as a mechanic do you not agree though that £700 is WAY ott for a headgasket swap? I've had quotes from decent garages for engine swaps on this car a bit cheaper than that, just i couldnt get my car to them when i needed it doing.

I know someone who is having done atm and is paying £800, he was quoted much more by other garages too.
I'd do it myself, although its meant to be quite a long job.

£700 is very very 'reasonable' for the v6 book time is 12 hours headset is £100 and headbolts £50

plus oil and filter change, antifreeze and the VAT that would be a lot of money even without bothering to get the heads checked.

I used to get quoted £300 to £400 for an A series mini before I worked out I could do it myself.

I don't think £700 is that bad an offer, and if you don't have a garage to work in, then I would jump at it.
