Heatsink Adhesive

I pulled off the heatsink for my Corsair Vengeance for painting. The thermal pads are still fine but the adhesive has fell off/dried up to much so I need to replace it.

Do I need to get double sided thermal adhesive tape or can I just use normal double sided tape as the thermal pad is still there?

Also do you run a full adhesive strip along or only for the small black chips?

Normal tape's adhesive would be at risk of warming up too much to be effective. I'd run along the memory ICs, but not the PCB.
