Heatsink not cooling properly

Hello, I just bought a new heatsink TPC 800 (and a pair of 120mm fans) to replace my old Scythe Mine rev. B with the plan to OC later.

My system is an Asrock Z68 Pro3, i5 2500K 3.3Ghz, here are the results I get:

The pic explains it better than me, after a short standard Intel Burn Test running at stock speeds, the temps can get as high as 65º even when ambient temp is ~26º. OCing is not viable since even a little bump makes temps go up to 75º and more.

The weird thing is that temps are more or less the same as with my old heatsink, both idle and load. I´m not an expert installing heatsinks but I´ve done it a couple times and never had this problem before. I´m out of ideas as to what it might be, or if the motherboard as anything to do with it.
Motherboard is not bent and applying pressure manually to the heatsink made no difference. The heatsink gets warm to the touch when burn testing, but I dont know if it´s hot enough or the heatsink came bad or what.
As of now I´ve tried 3 times. Applied Cooler Master thermal paste (I don´t have AS5 right now) 1º time in cross pattern, 2º just a very fine line, 3º grain of rice in the middle, all with same results. On detach I can see that thermal paste is well spread.

Any ideas?
 
Those temps don't seem particularly high. Are you sure any OC will really boost the temps too high?

My system is strange - idle temps often hit 50-55c, but even under full load with Prime 95 or doing some heavy video rendering, the temps remain at an acceptable 75c.
 
Those temps are not high while running the Intel Burn test. If you want lower then you should have got a Thermalright True Spirit 140 Power, A Noctua NH-U14S or one of the big dual tower / dual fan setups.
 
I think the ThermalRight True spìrit is more or less in the same range as my Cooler Master TPC 800, at least on load temps. I attached 2 fans to it at 2100 RPM so it works like a TPC 812.

Right now I´m playing with the VCore offset trying to get the best I can. I´ve peaked at 3.8Ghz with max temps at 79º, but I still think thats too high for this heatsink, specially after reading from people with relatively cheaps hyper EVO 212 getting much better results than this.

Tomorrow I´ll try to put back everything again, just in case.

You have to put a 2250rpm fan on the CM to beat the True Spirit at 800rpm (by 1 degree) and that's not even the True Spirit Power version which is several degrees cooler than the standard one.
Any of the coolers I listed will be an improvement over the CM and be a lot quieter too.
 
Just get a Megahalems or K2 Mount Doom.
I had Megahalems cooling a 4770k at 4.4ghz with decent temps, 2 akasa apache fans.
Best heatsink ever.
 
Those temps don't seem too great... I have an original Thetmaltake Frio and 2 fans from my old Corsair 200R on it in push/pull running half speed and my temps using 1.34v @ 4.5ghz are Max 71Celcius on burn test on one core, other cores are 68 or 69 Celcius.

What case do you use and how many other fans?

It´s an old Tacens, the airflow is not very good and the case temps are 34º, which I guess makes things even worse.

I ended up attaching just 1 fan to push air, since the 2º one to pull made no difference whatsoever and added noise. Also, behind the heatsink the case has a fan pulling air outside which made it somewhat redundant.


To be honest, I think I put too much faith in this heatsink and rushed the buy.
What really throwed me off is how my old heatsink performed the same as this one.
