Heatsink on a graphics card - paste or pads?

I need to put a heatsink back on a graphics card, primarily to RMA as it's defective. Would you go to the hassle of cutting up bits of a thermal pad, or just put some paste on the various components?

I'm not sure what Gigabyte will think of water cooling their card - they didn't care when it was a motherboard - so am unsure whether to come clean or not.

What would you do?
