sorry if i come across a bit 'dumb' as i've never done this before. im planning to get a new processor; AMD 3800 X2. however the processor i got atm is a AMD 3500. will i need to get a new heatsink? or will the one thats worked with the single core do the same job with the dual core / not make any difference

many thanks!

is the cooler the standard one that came with the 3500? Or is it an after market one?
Would you like to be able to overclokck your 3800 X2?

Hiya,

it's not dumb to ask advice, what is dumb is to make an assumtption and go off on something half cocked. luckily you came to the best place for the former in order to avoid doing the latter :D

I take it it's the stock hsf ( hsf = heatsink fan ) that either came with your pc or 3500 cpu? if so I'd advise against using it for your upgrade. depending upon your case and motherboard dimensions I'd really suggest you invest in a decent aftermarket hsf.

Also do you intend to run the X2 at stock speeds or are you looking to overclock ?
