Just reading that a lot of the new 2080Ti's are 1.5KG and some of the reviewers recommend metal reinforced PCI Express slots if you want to use them.

Is that a thing?

I had a 295x2 once which weighed 1.8KG and I don't remember an issue...

Unless subject to significant external forces, you'll be fine with a plastic slot and the pcie screws.

That reminds me i have 2 gpu braces from puget sitting around doing nothing, will have to list them in mm.

They didn't work very well with that card, due to its weight and the brace pushing it straight it seemed to slightly lift the cooler from the gpu. Though i'd imagine it would work better with FE cards seeing as the part it connects with has no fan housing in the way.

Yes. Most good motherboard last few years have metal reinforced PCI-e slots. Even mITX ones like the Z370-I Strix has one.
However the only good solution is the one similar to the Vega 64 Nitro.
It makes the card taking bit bigger space, but it won't bend nor need any extra contruptions taking space inside the case

I'd recommend using a support brace as suggested, although at 1.5kg there's still the physical strain on the PCI-e slot. Furthermore, not all motherboard vendors implementation of slot reinforcement do much, either. You will be fine as long as there isn't a great deal of visible sag. Most damage comes from applying too much pressure on install.
