I'm looking for a tripod -- right now I'm settling on the manfrotto 055 3 sections carbon..

However, I know there must be equivalent, or better tripods around for the same or less money -- anyone around here have a nice one?

I want to be able to put my DSLR, a medium format, or a 4x5 view camera on it. I would /prefer/ a ballhead if at all possible.

The 057 series look awesome, but it's over my budget, I'd say I'd be willing to spend 400 with a head...

I Use a Gitzo 3531S systematic which is rock solid. If you are tall you might want to get the L version which is longer. I combine that with a really right stuff BH-55 which is just perfection. Budget it higher but I spent about 2 years researching and testing everything and nothing really compared. Now really Right stuff make their own tripods which are supposedly better than Gitzo.

Thanks for the reply -- I eventually settled on the 055 carbon 3 sections; it's hard to judge the sizes etc; I just hope the 055 is enough for what I want. I can always resell it and upgrade I suppose...

the Gitzo 3531S has no raising column? I think the 057 is like that, the geared central column is an (expensive) extra...

Yep, you do t want a central column, it reduced stability and adds weight and cost, pointless. You want a tripod that reaches your desired height without reducing stability and allowing the weight to sit on the apex.
