I've been meaning to make this thread for a long time ever since friends started paying massive amounts of money for Heinz 57/Mongrel dogs.

When I was younger, if a Labrador bonked a Poodle (or any combination) the resulting dog was worthless, it was regarded as a mongrel or round here a Heinz 57.
My mate recently paid £2000 for a Cockerpoo and he's the same age as me so knows it's a mongrel but still paid it because they look nice.

This is sickening so I apologise but I watched all episodes of the recent Pooch Perfect with Sheridan Smith and they even had a section on mongrels where the contestants had to guess the two breeds however these dogs were worth a fortune.

Am I just being old and missing the point or do you agree that people are now making money out of mugs?

All breeds start out as Mongrels. Cockapoos are cross breeds that have been developed and recognised as a breed, so no, they are not mongrels

The 'Mongrel' is the healthier dog

This is what I was always led to believe

After watching Pooch Perfect it seems I can get any two dogs, give it a fancy name and sell it for big bucks.
Am I wrong and would my cross between a Chihuahua and a great Dane (Chidane) not be a proper expensive dog?

I don't see why it is 'sickening'?

People spend obscene amounts of money on things, £2k on a dog is hardly outrageous. To many they are just like members of the family.

To me it's not the people paying 2k for dogs who are a problem but some of the scummy gumtree type sellers who don't have animal welfare on the top of their priority list

Me watching all episodes of Perfect Pooch :)

Meh.

Funny thing is people moan that the pure breeds are unhealthy, unethical etc. Then when people start buying cross breeds those same people also start moaning 'they are too expensive'. Can't win it seems.

We need a regulated system regardless, too many chavs are breeding dogs with no care for the animal.

I agree about unscrupulous breeders knowingly breeding animals with known hereditary defects, maybe the trend for fashionable mongrels will edge out these doomed breeds with their hybrid vigour.

All dogs are mongrels just the "pedigree" ones have history behind them.

Doberman is believed to be made up of Rottweiler, Black and Tan Terrier, Weimaraner, and German Pinscher and others.

Give it 50 years and the kcc will see they can monetise them and have them all as registered breeds

Currently Cockapoos are not recognised as a pedigree breed, so yes, at the moment they are mongrels (hybrid/crossbreed, so a mongrel in all but name) :p

That's to be expected when there's so much profit to be made due to the price that dogs of a fashionable breed can be sold for.

Is my collie a mongrel?

If you watch Graeme Hall the Dogfather on Dogs Behaving Badly he gives a bit of a history with every dog he goes and 'cures'.
So yes they have all been bred with other dogs to make a certain type of dog that would be good at certain things.
Obviously as years go by they get adopted by the 'Dog Society' as pedigrees but as pointed out a Cockapoo is not a recognised pedigree but can still sell for ridiculous money.
It isn't the only mongrel that sells for a ridiculous amount either because some people have believed the hype.
A girl I work with wants a Labrapoo and I think that's £2500.
