My housemates 8800 gtx has blown and has been awaiting replacement for nearly 2 months now, so hes going to plunge for a new card but im arguing that some of the newer cards maybe to fast for his e6600 and they may be bottlenecking it? he wants to spand about 120 thanks for any advice

Overclocked CPU? It depends on the clock speed of the CPU. I would just buy a 5770 and do some benchmarks before and afterwards. If the results show no or little gain then the CPU is clearly bottlenecking. In which case, he can overclock the CPU or buy a Q6600 for around £80 and overclock that to 3.4GHz. If the gain is significant then job done. Worst case, the upgrade may come over budget unless he decides to overclock.
