I've just re-built my pc with the following spec:

C2D E6600 (with stock cooler)
2Gb Geil PC 6400 DDR2
Gigabyte DS4
2 WD sata drives (160Gb and 240Gb - both 7200rpm and both 16mb cache)
Corsair 520w power supply
Sapphire 256Mb Radeon X1950 Pro
Creative Audigy 2 ZS
Sony 52x52x32 CD-RW
Pioneer A09 DVD-RW
Coolermaster Cavelier case

I've now re-installed Windows XP Pro and Vista Ultimate about 7 times, and I'm still having problems.

The pc's currently running ridiculously slowly .... As I type this it's taking 5 seconds for the pc to catch me up! Email's are taking 10x longer than normal to download ..... the whole system is dead on its' feet.

I think it's a hard drive problem. I haven't run SATA drives before and I'm worried I've put the drives on the wrong connectors on the mobo .... or something like that!

The ram is all recognised. And the cpu is showing as running at 2.4Ghz, which I belive is right.

Could my problem be a SATA one? If so, PLEASE help me sort this out!

Thanks,

Chris

To me it sounds like a hard drive problem. Same thing happened to me before my hard drive died. Things went dog slow and froze every few minutes. Not sure if it is the hard drive but thats my guess.

Wise words mate!

I was continually trying to install on the 160Gb drive. Thought I'd take that out and try installing on the 240Gb drive and (touch wood!) it seems to be working fine .....

If your still having problems, have a look in task manager and see if something is hogging all the cpu, could be a bad driver or a malfunctioning program....

Just a thought

Good to hear that it seems to be working. Hope it stays that way

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!

Oh god ....

Right. After 2 weeks of continuous problems I've ripped out both the SATA Western Digital drives and temporarily put an old Maxtor IDE drive in to load a stable WIndows build so I can post this message!

I have had hard drive related errors of every possible type with these drives. I have been ripping my hair out with frustration. I must have installed Windows XP Pro about 18 times in the last 2 weeks, with varying degrees of success.

1. Windows would install successfully, run for a few days (just long enough for me to re-install all my standard software and restore my Outlook settings etc., then it would refuse to boot (missing Windows files was the usual error)
2. Windows would install semi-successfully, but would then refuse to boot shortly afterwards;
3. Windows wouldn't install due to missing file etc etc ....

I think I can safely say it's definitely a hard drive type error, but what's causing it???

a) Something to do with the controllers on the DS4 mobo? I am connecting it up properly (I'm not an idiot, and I've tried the different SATA connectors on the mobo, and still no stability)
b) I've done something random with the bios settings? Don't think so though ...
c) The SATA cables aren't secure enough (the standard yellow Gigabyte ones) and movement in these is causing the problem?

This is causing me major ball-ache, as I'd put off this upgrade for a while and was very happy with the bits and pieces I'd put together.

Was hoping for it to be a nice speedy Vista Ultimate system, but can't get XP to last long enough at the moment!

Anyone care to throw a few ideas into the hat??

Cheers,

Chris

Did you try loading controller drivers during XP installation? (I had to with my HDD or it'd just tell me my hard drive's damaged).

So it works fine with the IDE drive, yeah?

There could be something up with the SATA controller on your mobo.

I used the Gigabyte driver disc and installed all the drivers .....

At the moment (touch wood!) it's fine with the IDE drive.
