Hey guys,
I just joined overclockers forum today, so nice to meet all of you.

I live in London, England

I have some questions regarding the 6990:

When would you imagine the 6990 to be released?

Price range?

Performance ?

Thanks !

Soonish. 500+. Really good performance.
If the card isnt amazing then it will be maybe 450?
Im guesing mid feb at latest then nv will release their dual chip.

Ps. Welcome to the forums!

Well the current best card is the 5970, so the 6990 will replace that and become the best performing card in the market.

I heard Nvidia is planning a dual GPU card too, but it is unknown what cores they will use.

It should be out within a month.

£399-£479.

Similar performance to crossfire 6970 give or take.

*New Rumors* It might be possible to unlock the card and get extra performance.

Radeon 6950 2GB costs $290 in the US but there are some hefty rebates on them being issued that make them as cheap as $260. It means that this card is going to drop in pricing a little, probably to $270 or so, very soon.

Radeon 6970 2GB is $370 and is likely to drop by the same amount at the time.

Radeon 6990 4GB will most likely be around $599 mark then and that would indicate £449 in the UK.

It may be that the initial pricing will be slightly higher (£20 premium or so) but the card may be just effectively sold for $549 making the UK pricing closer to £400 mark (£415 or so).

Look at Crossfire 6950s reviews to know what to expect from the card. Crossfire 6970 will probably indicate the overclocked performance of the 6990.

It will probably be priced somewhere between 2x 6950 and 2x6970. The top end dual gpu card has never cost more than 2x single high end gpu cost, and has always had an rrp of a significant saving over 2 single high end gpu's, though the rrp for the 5970 was £440, and you could rarely find it under £540 for the first 4-5 months, that shouldn't happen this time around. Remember that 2x5870's were £600 for a long time so £440 rrp was a massive saving(£40 more than 2x5850's).

Though its probably worth waiting for because it could push prices down across the range. IF the 580gtx is soundly beaten, its price could come down, as could the 570gtx, the 6970 and possibly the 6950. If you're building a rig from scratch you could well be better off buying a decent design mobo with 2 spread out pci-e slots, two custom and better cooled 6950's.

The 6990 and most certainly anything Nvidia release will be SO close to the pci-e 300W spec they are more likely to be cut down further than any previous dual gpu card, two single cards will almost certainly overclock better and offer better performance.

Honestly theres very little reason for a single card setup these days unless you've already got a single pci-e slot computer and only want to upgrade the gpu.

If you were after better value, 2x560gtx in sli or 2x 6870's offer exceptional value/performance and great xfire scaling. Depends what you use them for, gpgpu work you can only go with the high end cards, ultimate performance, go with the higher end cards, great value and "good enough" performance, the slightly lower cards are a better choice.

Lets put it this way the Highest most expensive gpu cards Nvidia dont have in their arsenal, due to the fact tha AMD's chips are smaller, more power efficient and produce less heat. Thats why they can get two chips on one pcb...

However this time around, the new GF 114 chips seem to be an improvement... I would think that IF Nvidia bring out a dual gpu card, it will be competitve against the 6990, otherwise, I dont see why they would bother to release one?

Theres nothing suggesting they are going to release one at the moment, last year we saw a good half dozen various pcb shots of dual gf100's and dual gf 104's, none saw the light of day, so far we have Fud saying its coming(he said that 100% for certain a dual gf100 was coming and soon... for about 6 months, and still hasn't said "oh it got canceled") and we've had one pcb shot of a potential dual gpu pcb possibly new and based on dual gf100/gf114(it was almost certainly gf104/gf114 due to less memory).

Dual gf114's wouldn't beat a dual 6970, feature wise, it doesn't offer any DP anything so Nvidia would be releasing a high end non gpgpu part, for a company pushing gpgpu so heavily it would make AMD's fastest gpgpu part massively faster than Nvidia's fastest gpgpu card(6990 vs 580gtx).

I'm still not convinced they will do a dual gpu part at all, if so it is more likely to be a gf114, if so, it won't beat the AMD equivilent.

To be fair Fudzilla does have a picture of someone from AMD holding it, which makes it pretty likely in my opinion.

We will perhaps see much more innovation now nVidia are back on form with the 5xx series.

From what I read Nvidia have a dual gpu card and are waiting to release it around the same time as AMD's Antilles. They were going to release a dual gpu 4xx but killed it off I guess since the 5xx series was around the corner?

Its been along time since Nvidia had the top GPU King crown... so im sure Nvidia will be apprehensive to make sure that any dual gpu they release will be serious competition for the 6990.

Saying that, if the 6990 is as good as a 6950 xfired or better, then its going to be a serious card.

So 2x £220 cards ( gtx 560 ) vs 1x £450 card (ATI 6990 )

Do you think the SLI combo would dish out higher performance?
I say this because they are nearly the same price.

It doesn't matter what he thinks (no offence DM), wait for the official reviews.

It's likely that the 6990 will offer better performance then overclocked GTX 560s in SLI but there's no point in starting the flamewar as of yet :)

as a previous poster mentioned, surely if its the same price as 2x6970s the better route wou;d be 2x 6950s flashed with breathing space between the cards in a well layed out motherboard?

i stupidly have my 2x pci-e slots close together on mine :/
