My freind's wordpad document has corrupted, she says she had to restart her computer and she opened it back up it was blank.
This was her wedding planner!
She emailed it over to myself and in both wordpad and office2010 it's showing as squares. Notepad is blank but you can highlight and area.

Any ideas what's happening?

My other idea is that she uses a programme designed to find information from formatted drives and hope that it can recovered that way, or will that not work due to the way how things are saved?

What size is the file when you view its properties?

Few things you could try:
Open and Repair in Word (highlight the file you want to open then use the down arrow that's next to the 'Open' button)
Check the temp folder (not sure if Wordpad uses .tmp files like Word does)
Open it in Open Office.
Try recuva but not sure how much use it will be.

Yeah, you could try an undelete program like Recuva to look for temporary files or previous saved versions. Other than that, I reckon it's probably gone. She's learned a lesson about making backups the hard way :( Suggest that she syncs her documents to something like Dropbox in future, to prevent this kind of situation.

Thanks guys. I think it's most likely gone. I've tried repairing it in word, open office, couple of rtf repair programmes and nothing.
Even a hex editor (although no idea what I would be doing) is just showing is "00" so guessing it's all gone.
