I've just downloaded Ubuntu 7.10 and installing it on my lapton (Celly M 1.6, 40Gb and 256mb RAM) but i'm not able to get it to install.

The CD boots fine and brings up the main options such as OEM Install, CD Check etc. When I select Start or Install Ubuntu I shows the 'Loading Linux Kernel' it begins to load (this is possibly of importance, just before the loading screen it says 'PCI: Cannot allocate region 4 of device resource) and then goes to the progress bar. This then goes to the blank cream background which I assume would be the install screen but the the installation seems to stop, well sort of.

The DVD Drive is still searching the disk but the installation doesn't seem to be doing anything. The system is very slow but the cursor is still active. I've noticed that there is no HD activity which is pretty wierd.

I've tried 2 different installation disks and get the same problem. Also chose the other options on the disk (CD Check is fine, OEM won't install, Safe Mode equivilant works okay too). I did leave the install going for ages but it didn't progress anywhere. Also checked the disk and it is readable in XP.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Am I just being stupid and missed out something really simple?

Hi try downloading the alternate desktop CD version, the standard version includes the live CD which causes problems on some computers when installing.
