I recently bought an AMD Athlon 64 3700+. In the manual it says "Thermal interface material is required for all AMD processors. Use only the recommended thermal interface material for this processor". I thought that most processors came with thermal pads and this has now confused me a lot as I have no idea what a thermal pad looks like therefore I dont know if it has one. Sorry if this sounds stupid, thanks in advance.

Probley didnt make much sense.

Right with the cpu you will have a heatsink, at the bottom of the heatsink is where the thermail paste is. You dont need to put any paste on the cpu its self becuase the heatsink already has it. So all you need to do is fit the heatsink and fan.

The stock heatsink has the thermal paste already on. If your using a 3rd market heatsink then paste is usually supplied for you to put on. :)
