Heya.

I doubt strongly that I would ever set it up (I rely on glasses with which to see) but some one pointed out to me this morning that you can go 3D with a Radeon.

This was news to me, I thought Nvidia were the only ones erm, clever (hah) enough to offer it.

So what glasses would you need? obviously a Nvidia kit is out of the question, but I'm just curious now as to what sort of glasses you would need.

TIA !

Me.

It's not so much the glasses it's more to do with the display. With any 3D solution whether it be Nvidia or AMD's you need to make sure you have a monitor or TV that works with your video card. I suggest you go the AMD site and look at the 3D compatibility list it gives you a list of compatible displays.

+1

The AMD 3D system relies on the glasses signalling to be done by the display - so you don't buy a 3D kit + a 120Hz monitor (like with the Nvidia 3D system), instead you go for a monitor which does it's own signalling and comes with it's own paired glasses. Such monitors would need to support 3D via Displayport 1.2 to work best with the AMD 3D system (3D via HMDI 1.4 will also work - but isn't as good).

The best 3D monitors to use with AMD cards which are currently available seem to be the Samsung ones. Just make sure you are looking at one that does 3D via Displayport 1.2 - like this one.

May ask what specific AMD card you are using?

Yeah I'm good on that (120hz and all) but just wondered what glasses you would need.

I'm using a 6970 Lightning..

I highly doubt I could set it up if I'm honest. As I say I rely on glasses (I'm not vain enough to want to stick things in my eyes) so I'm a bit naffed from the off really.

I also suffer from flicker induced nausea, so yeah, highly doubt I could use it any way.

Ed. And if I did set it up I would get a cheap 22" monitor. My friend has a 120hz one but it's only 1680x1050 which no doubt gives the needed speed a boost.

In terms of glasses, the Samsung active-3D montors seem to come with a pair of the "SSG-3100GB" glasses, but will also work with pretty much any Samsung active-shutter glasses made for 2011 TVs/monitors.

The 3100 3D glasses seem to be made to fit over normal glasses - but I guess this isn't certain as it may depend on the design of your glasses.

That said, if you did go for a monitor like that samsung and didn't end up using the 3D much - then it wouldn't be such a waste - since in "2D" mode it runs as a 120Hz monitor (when connected via display port) for some very smooth on-screen movement and no 3D goggles required.
