I've just got myself a PS3 and its the first console i've owned since having a PS1. I've read the sticky in this forum and done some googling but its a bit of information overload.

I understand that the PS3 is a pretty powerful tool and i was just hoping people could help me out with idiots guides to streaming media from my PC, using Internet TV etc. I'm not asking for detailed replies just links to good guides, useful websites etc :)

And if there's any other cool stuff it can do feel free to recomend it to me :)

Thanks.

I use PlayTV and transfer stuff on USB memory sticks to my PS3 rather than stream as then I can turn off my PC when I use the PS3.
Never messed about with streaming as can't see much point in running a PS3 and a PC to watch something

Whats the best (and free) method of using the ps3 to watch internet TV?

Ok as youre in the UK there is an iPlayer icon on xmb that will allow you to use iplayer on the PS3 pretty simple stuff to use.
Also http://www.tvcatchup.com works in the browser, this streams live free view to your PS3, but as youre prob on a TV its not that useful.
Another TV/Film thing to try is www.blinkbox.co.uk, you can watch tv shows and films many of which are free. The only down side is the quality isnt brilliant (even though you can adjust settings) and with the free stuff you have to watch and advert every now and then.
The Vidzone app you can get from PSN is a free Music streaming service, you can also watch dedicated music chanels on here.

For media streaming a program call simply PS3 Media server http://ps3mediaserver.blogspot.com/ is one of the best and most powerful one for the PS3 and best of all its free.
Hope this helps you out a bit, oh dont forget to get some games its what the PS3 does best lol.:D

I was being an ass about the Linux post.

"How to get the most out of my ps3?".... you could try buying games for it?

The only things I do with my PS3:

Use ps3 media server
Use tvcatchup
use BBC iplayer
use vidzone
watch blu-rays/dvds
oh and play some games, I guess I might as well play games since they tacked on that feature for free.

How does Tversity compare to PS£3 Media Server ??

Currently using tversity, wondered how the other compared ?

Thanks Ben :)

Can you manually set the resolution to 720p? Got mine going in via HDMI but it doesnt look as smooth as the 360.

Yep, in display options just select 720p. If you're on component with the 360 there's a chance the PS3 will never look as smooth. Due to being analogue component often results in some artificial 'smoothing' of the image, whereas HDMI gives a more 'accurate' reproduction of the image, blemishes and all.
