i have never set up up surround sound for my tv before, but now i feel the time is right. ive got a 2 VERY nooby questions if someone could answer for me. can you have preset volume for each equipment, so you dont have to change the volume when you switch to a different appliance? secondly, can you only have one of the audio source running throught speakers or could multiply sources be run through at once? i.e. cable playing on my tv and xbox360 on my pc moniters but both the audio are running through my av reciver and playing through my speakers at the same time.

Yep, its no and no I'm afraid

The volume tends to be universal although some settings like the effects applied are usually retained for each channel

As for combining channels, I've never seen it done, in the main the unit will need all its processing power for the channel its working on, plus theres just no demand for it, as it'll sound a mess.
