Hi All

tl;dr

Which cheapo USB headset thats reasonable?

Long version below

Ive started playing some online games with some friends. I currently play in front of the TV, mouse and keyboard on a piece of wood. Its not ideal, but thats all i can do right now.

When playing single player, the audio just goes through the nice surround sound system, all is well, but i have no Mic, and the need for one has come up, so a headset seems like a good solution.

I'm a fair way away from the PC, but i have a USB hub right next to me for mouse and keyboard. So i thought a USB headset would be the way to go. Looking around, many of the affordable ones has the 3.5mm plug for consoles.

So, would i be better:

a) getting a USB headset
b) getting a USB audio interface to plug into the hub, then using Headset with 3.5mm plug
c) run a long audio cable round to the back of the PC and use a Headset with 3.5mm plug

Option C does present a bit more faff, as the PC sits in a TV rack, so when i take the PC out, with i do fairly often, i have to unplug everything. which is currently quite easy, but there are 6 audio plugs on the back and i have old-ish colourblind eyes.

So I guess, is one system, 3.5mm or USB, generally better than the other?

This new fad (for me) might be short lived, so can anyone recommend a cheapo headset? i wont be playing for hours on end, but if the quality was alright, so it doesnt give me a headache (everything does) that would be great.

Thanks

A USB headset for that price range isn't going to get you far.

There's nothing on the OCUK website at the moment that could be recommended that's in stock, and outside of that you're looking at some Chinese branded stuff of questionable quality.

yeah i'm starting to think it might be better to run the cable round... i need to convert the 3.5 trrs connector to 2x 3.5mm anyway, if i get a short one, and a long extension to plug into that, it'll solve the plugging in faff too

Can you recommend a headset with the 3.5mm audio for that price?

Thanks

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £39.95 (includes shipping: £0.00)

From the OCUK store I'd spring the extra tenner for these, there's a bunch of different colours for the same price.

You might be able to score an open box/clearance Hyper X Cloud within budget with a bit of luck, I've not checked the clearance lines on the OCUK site though.

Marketing for the most part, yeah.

It's a stereo headset with 40-53mm drivers depending on version, much like any other stereo headset you could emulate surround on them if you wanted.
