Help accessing a hdd

Ive told a friend i can get his family photos off of a HDD but so far i have not been able to and i dont want to let him down.

His HDD was from a laptop that broke, its got Vista installed and is user account password protected. I have tried using the HDD as an external drive, doing this i can access some of his files but when i try to open his pictures folder i get a password needed error. I know his password but there is no where to enter it.

Does anyone know how i can retreive his photos? I have tried booting the HDD on various computers but it wont boot up into Vista.

i am grasping at straws but have you used something like Hirens or ubcd?

i remember useing Hirens cd before to recover files from a corrupted hard drive before, also as its bootable, i would presume it would bypass any password stuff.

I haven't got the foggiest but would the penguin one open it? Linux (Hey no laughing).

I use handy recovery but you have to buy it.
