I've had this installed for a while now and recently Adobe Photoshop has been acting up. It keeps crashing as soon as I load anything to do with text (this includes the character pane, paragraphs pane, any file containing text, adding text to a new document, even just clicking on the T icon for text. The error message which pops up points to a DLL file (CoolType.dll), and I'm getting the feeling this file has become corrupt.

Can someone please zip me a copy from their system?

There are 2 files of the name CoolType.dll, one for x86 and one for x64. They must be from the same: Adobe CS5 Master Collection, and can be found in the following locations on x64:
  • C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5 (64 Bit)
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5
Email to gee at live dot com would be very much appreciated!

Thanks.

The CoolType.dll is part of the typography engine. Which would suggest your problem is font related. Adobe have already issued a number of fixes to crashes and have addressed a number of font related crashes. Have you updated your programs?

Thanks again to Asim for sending me the file - unfortunately replacing that particular DLL didn't work.

I have however managed to fix the problem but only with Photoshop x86. Photoshop x64 still throws an error but I can live without it!

I read this exact problem is caused by the presence of a single or many corrupt fonts. I backed up, took ownership of and deleted all fonts from my Fonts folder (apart from those Windoze wouldn't let me because they were being used). I turned off all options under Type in Photoshop Preferences. Rebooted, opened Photoshop and it works fine!

I think my Windows 7 fonts folder got severely messed up because with default ownership and permissions it would only display about 10-15 fonts. With full ownership and permissions I could see all files, and there were a load of randomly named .FON files (ceb4845.fon). I've gotten rid of most of them now but there are a few required ones. I'll replace the deleted fonts few at a time to figure out which one's corrupt.

Yeah I updated to 12.0.1 and the problem persisted.
