just wondering if there is a significant difference between the AM2+ and AM3 socket processors? Cheers.

Specifically, looking at an AMD 9750 quad core, and an AMD Athlon II X2 Dual Core 240 2.80GHz which is on this week only.

The AM3 chips allow you to utilise DDR3 memory "properly" (If I remember rightly, AM2+ is limited with speeds).

If I was buying an AMD CPU right now, I'd go for an AM3 chip over an AM2+ one.

if i remember correctly the amd phenom 9750 dont support DDR3, if you want DDR3 go and get a AMD phenom II 550 or a amd phenom II 955

AM2+ chip can not use DDR3 at all.

AM3 chip can use DDR2 in a AM2+ motherboard & DDR3 in an AM3 motherboard.

AM2+ has an integrated DDR2 memory controller, and so can use DDR2 memory. It can support AM3 processors because of this.

AM3 uses the DDR3 memory controller on the chip, with no integrated one and so it can only support DDR3.

Both AM3 & AM2+ have integrated Memory Controllers.
The AM3 has both DDR3 & DDR2 integrated Memory Controllers.

AM2+ only has DDR2 integrated Memory Controller.

AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 955 Black Edition 3.20GHz (Socket AM3)
Now look at my setup & the DDR2 Motherboard.

I'm looking at getting a new board too, and have memory already. The memory will be DDR2 anyway, it's not going in a high performance pc.

I think I'll go for the X2. Thanks for the help :).

Hmm I have a question which will probably seem stupid..Given that the memory controller in AMDs is in the chip, can I run ddr3 on a motherboard that doesnt explicitly state it supports it, with an X2? Specifically I'm looking at the Gigabyte GA-M61PME-S2P nForce 430 as its on TWO.

Hmm have just read a few unfavourable reviews, might see about a different motherboard...any suggestions? DDR3 not necessary but would be good - basically after a cheap system to run windows 2003 server.

Actually, looking at it a low end dual core Intel and motherboard can be had for pretty much the same price, might look there instead.

You can only run the memory which the motherboard states.
