Am trying to get the internet on sky broadband but getting nowhere

I can see the network and connect and enter the wpa key no problem and I get 71-91% signal strength but thats it cannot get the internet just says waiting for www.blah blah blah etc.

Having done some research it seems I either need to install network manager 0.7 which seems to have lots of other stuff I don't need or "wpa_supplicant"

The issue I have is the pc is too far away from the router for a wired connection so whats the best option to get the apps installed ?

The pc is not mine btw and is 8 miles drive away so need be sure of what to do so am not running around all day.

Cheers

Ubuntu 8.04.1
Edimax EW-7318USg 54Mbps Turbo USB 2.0 Network Adapter

Don't know which routers sky use sorry

i just got sky (not on linux nor wireless yet).. they gave us netgear ones. i can be more specific when i get home if need..

Well I got a telephone extension cable and moved the router next to the pc and connected with a wired connection.

Still no joy

At one point it did bring up overclockers but with just text menus in blue on a white background but as soon as i clicked one got the cannot find www.blah blah again

Both the wired and wireless links are flashing on the router but it either cannot find the site or it finds it and says transfering data from www.overclockers.co.uk but nothing comes up and the time bar in the bottom right of the window gets to about half way and no further no matter how long I wait

Doin my head in now

Its wpa I have the problem with its set by sky so can't change it.

The sky routers are pre configured I don't think you are able to log into them and change anything like you can with a router you buy.

They supply you with the essid name and wpa key.

Yes you can.

The Sky routers are preconfigured but you can type http://192.168.0.254 <--- I think. Can't remember now.. might be .0.1 or 1.1 and go into wireless that way. ( It should be on the bottom of the router anyway.)

How were you trying to configure ubuntu to wireless ?

I couldn't get into the router via Linux as the problems above.

As soon as I put windows on I still had problems with the sky router it kept connecting and then disconnecting.

Used a wired connection accessed the router config with 192.168.0.1 username: admin pass: sky

Changed the WPA key, unticked UPNP and changed the channel then rebooted and perfect 100% signal and no disconnects.

This build was for someone else so I could not keep him waiting while I figured it all out. He chose to buy windows so he could be up and running.

If he hadn't had to buy the windows and could return it then I would have just set the router to wep as it worked flawlessly on my network.
