ok I got a Aspire one yesterday and Linux is looking good but, I need some help as I have never used it before.

I want to Update Firefox, I downloaded it from a link on firefox and saved to my download folder. Now when I click on the Icon it opens in X archiver with a list ? I extracted the list thinking this would do something ??

How do I install the update ? As you can see I haven't a clue so please be patient with me and as Basic as possible.

I have manage to enable "show desktop Menu on right click" and get to add and remove software. Firefox is listed and ticked, now if I could just update it ??

thanks .

Thanks for that much appreciated ;) I will give it a go later and report back how I got on or not as the case may be :D

Another thing I was wondering is about Antivirus and firewall etc what do I use on Linux or don't I ?? is that an incredibly stupid question ???

thanks again mucho appreciated

regards

Hello fellow Linux newb..

re: Anti-virus / firewalls. I have been reliably informed that you really don't need to worry about these things with Linux.

2 main reasons; people don't tend to write viruses that target Linux and that Linux distributions don't have the same loop-holes that Windows has that can be exploited by viruses.

Remember that to install stuff in linux you need to be the admin (that sudo command thing, followed by entering your password); which a virus will not know!

What this means, in real terms, is that you can forget about the bloating anti-virus software slowing your system down

Hello and what a learning curve it has been  although I have to say I haven't touched my windows system all week!

I am definitely a convert and it is nice to know I haven't got to worry about viruses :)

I haveetried to install a few things from add and remove but it always has a error ? I downloaded skype rpm and installed ok and I have updated Firefox to version 3.0.1

The main issue I have now is I want to burn on my new drive but cant install anything to do so...once I have this sorted I will be over the moon :D

You still have to be careful though, if anyone gets remote access to your system they may still be able to do some damage.
google for vmsplice, as an example ;)

I would say if you're new to an operating system you shouldn't be going mad updating apps from random sources on the internet.
Take it slow and read as much info as you can. Let others make the mistakes so you can learn from them. ;)

You don't want to reach a point where your system is unusable because of your own errors.
