Help!! Best free Deleted file recoverer

Mate formatted his HD and needs info off of it.

What is the best free program to get the files back? ta

I've seen Recuva mentioned a few times here. I've personally not used it.

EDIT: Not sure if it'll work when HD has been formatted.

wont restore all items in the 'recycle bin' work ?

no wait...he deleted the recycle bin

*EDIT* bit of advice....until you find some decent recovery software....best not to use the drive that has been formatted(atleast not the partition that has the data on it).
install it as a secondary drive once you have found some recovery software otherwise you will end up writing over the very data you need to recover(also copy the recovered software onto another storage device).
