HELP Big Win98 Internet Problem

Hi I have rather a strange problem.

My friend who owns a small company has me sort his computer out for him when he has a problem.

This machine is running Good old Win98.
There is a ZOOM USB modem 56k installed.

I set him up last year on Tiscali, on Pay as you go, 1p per minute etc. as all he wants is for it to connect up to be able to send his yearly SAGE files off to the accountant/tax man.

Last year all was fine, this year not.

So i went to have a look at his computer today and this is what i have found.

First:
If i use 'Phone Dialler', I can phone numbers/ my mobile etc so i know the modem is working. But if i attempt to set up a dial up connection to tiscali on either of the Tiscali phone numbers for dial up:
08440529009 or
08440575000

I dont get any connection, the computer wont connect to the net, anything. Now i have tried ringing tiscali and they say the numbers are correct etc.

Anyone else help me out here, Maybe there is some other FREE 56k Dial up company he can use, I will have to set it up. he wont surf the net, just use it now and then to connect up with the 56k modem and send files.

I dont know what else to do as last year it worked fine.

need to sort this asap as year end is imminent. So need some ISP that offers Win98 Dial up, easy to set up etc.

Just been back, tried a load of free ISP dial up, everyone all i got was a window come up saying

"connecting" and nothing, never connected at all on any of them

now the modem works, I can dial my mobile from it, Dial the other office number.

All that is on that line is the fax machine. I have not tried unpluggin the fax machine though. I dont need to dial anything for a outside line as when i use phone dialler, i just type in my mobile number 07967 3***** and it connects/rings my phone fine.

So something is adrift. Somewhere, but i'll be damned if i can find it ?

sounds like its software side problems such as authentication or something, can you update the modem drivers or re-install them?

Its a ZOOM 3090 USB modem, think i have the right drivers, but shall have another look.

Just dont understand it at all. Why can it phone my phone, but not connect to any of the internet numbers ?

Been so long since I touched win98 i forget a lot of things on it.

This is the 1st thing USB wise that has ever been on the PC. I quess it is working as the phone dialler works and i can see the modem under MODEM properties.

You dont have to do anything special in win 98 for USB enable do you ?

If it's Win98SE not, if its Win98 yes, there a patch on M$ website.
But given that you can dial out I suspect it's not a problem.

Go for the modem driver reinstall

Well sorted it out.

brought it home, connected the modem to my master socket with nothing else plugged in and connected to the net straight away, Typicall.

So at the office, it's connected through a extension cable to a telephone socket which has a adapter on so as to also give a socket for the Fax machine. So there must be a problem somewhere in the socket or extension cable, unless the fax can cause a problem.

So at least it's all sorted now, ill take it back Monday and plug it in and all should be fine as at least I know the PC is fine.
