everything on my router was is same but all i get is

"cannot contact the domain name server"

so i decide to put thier crappy old modem on my laptop to see if that will connect and after hours of messing around i finally get a connection to tiscali but......

i still cant view web pages or do anything other than connect to the server !

ive turned all firewalls off tried the modem in my laptop and the tower still the same problem i have spent many an evening with tiscasli going through thier " this is a mouse " speech

and all they do is blame my Pc's as if 2 machines are going to suffer from the same problem at the same time

im going to go crazy

someone please tell me they have had the same problem

as tiscali tell me my TCP/IP software inside windows is corrupt which is funny as its using the same software to dial up and enter this !!

please help AAARRRGGGHHHHHH

C

Ugh, Tiscali. I take it reliability isn't overly important to you?

Anyway. When you're connected, open a command prompt and do:

'ping www.bbc.co.uk'

&

'ping 212.58.224.81'

I expect that the first one won't work, but the second will - it sounds like you've got no DNS.

Can you post the output of 'ipconfig /all' too.

Correct !!

Connection-specific DNS suffix :
Description : WAN (PPP/SLIP) interface
Physical address : 00-53-45-00-00-00
dhcp enabled : no
ip address :88.105.32.100
subnet mask :255.255.255.255
default gateway : 80.105.32.100
dns servers 80.225.250.178
:80.225.250.186
netbios over tcpip : disabled

phew thats a lot to type in !!

thanks for the help ;)

I know you've said you disabled any firewalls, but try uninstalling them. I've seen it happen on a few occasions where they report as being disabled but are still doing stuff and generally getting in the way.

Both of the DNS servers you listed tell me to go away when I try to use them (nothing unusual in that) which does at least show that there is something running on those servers. Nothing would surprise me when it comes to Tiscali, but it would be strange, even for them, to have two knackered DNS servers.

Edit - Copy and paste is a lot quicker than typing ;)

lol copy and paste would be nice but i can only access the net on my laptop via dial up then i use my desktop to "try" and use the adsl but i have to swap out the modem lead

firewall wise the only ones i have are windows firewall and that is turned off !

other than that the router has a built in firewall which i have disabled and that wont conect at all as it says

" cannot contact the domain name server "

even though it gives me an ip address and everything else is as it should be it just cant contact the dns server

im stumped and it does the same thing on both my laptop and desktop pc's either using tiscali's modem or my router

any other thoughts ?

Try setting either your router or your machine to use different DNS servers.

212.23.3.100 (PlusNet) or 212.159.6.9 (Zen) are as good as any.

with tiscali i found that you have to use there DNs servers or your connections will fail.

DNS server ip's 212.74.112.66 and 212.74.112.67

212.23.3.100 = Zen, 212.159.6.9 = PlusNet. </pedant>

In any case, those name servers will only do recursive lookups if your IP is from that particular ISP:

paul@thor:~:$ dig @212.159.6.9 www.google.com

; <<>> DiG 9.2.2 <<>> @212.159.6.9 www.google.com
;; global options: printcmd

;; QUESTION SECTION:

And so on...

thanks for the help guys

ive tried everything my end and gave tiscali 24 hours to sort it out basically as the router wont even connect to thier dns server and there modem says its connected but i still have no access on both PC's

even after a fresh install of windows its still the same :(

any ideas for a decent isp ?

cheers

am using Freedom2Surf and not had any problems, Pipex are also reliable and I used to use Telewest BB and never had a problem.

Although a lot of people complain about Telewest.

Check out www.adslguide.org they have lots of comparisons and lots of people in their forums who are experts when it comes to ISP's.
