Well, i suppose it was to be expected. The Golf just broke down :p

Was driving along and the engine just cut out, and the accelerator pedal has dropped - theres only about half an inch of travel to it.

The AA guy came out and had a look, and said it was either the modulator or the distributor? Seems strange that the peddle has dropped though.

So, any ideas what it could be? I'm still paying off the bill for the last garage work done, so i'm thinking of tackling this one myself.

Cheers.

I dont have that car but Ive changed a distributor before and it was very simple.

Potentially thats an expensive part but I got mine for 20 quid and it just screwed on, check out if yours is the same and just go ahead if so because these kind of problems are a git to figure out.

If anyone with golf knowledge is to help you, I think they'll need more details to your description.

Cars breaking down isn't fun, they always seem to be going wrong. Try 8 new valves, a new cam belt, and a new Clutch master cylinder, all within a month lmao, now thats a Fiesta for you :p

Aren't buses lovely? :D

then the engine should still run and idle.

Thats what i thought.

There was a cable coming out of the autochoke that was burnt in half, so we stripped the wires down and connected them back up and it still wont start up. The pedal has completely dropped now, and the cable is slack

But why would "modulator" or distributor failure cause the pedal to drop to the floor?

I'm thinking theres two things wrong with it, the module/distributor like the guy said, and the throttle cable. Anyone know how easy it is to replace the cable?

Lol i've been posting on that forum for a while now and didn't find those threads  :) Thank you mate

My dad said that there should be a bolt on the cable somewhere, that you can tighten. This would explain why the pedal had a bit of travel, and now its just dropped - the bolt could have came off?

Ooh, didn't notice it was a Mk2

There are no bolts holding the cable to the pedal. If you get your head underneath the dash where the pedals are you can see the throttle pedal. At the other end of it (ie not the end you press with your foot) there is a round hole. This should have a black rubber bush (looks like a bung/gromit) in it, the end of the accelerator cable fits through it like a hook, really simple - no bolts or anything like that. If the bush splits or has fallen out then the cable falls out all the time, you will have to get one from VW or Euro Car Parts/GSF but they are pennies IIRC.

It probably stalled because of a minor tuning issue like the idle being a bit low, don't worry about that for now.

I've had 2 Mk2 Golfs and this has happened on both of them.

Helpful fellow. :)

My money is on that too, it happened to my MK2. When I was on a multi story car park ramp too.
