I have a space case and now have networking set up in my house. Im looking into building an HD capable media pc. I have a 42" LCD television so Id like to utilise the 1080p resolution that its capable of. Since its likely that I'll be transcoding high definition videos what sort of processor would I need to have? Naturally it will need to have a large hard drive but my main question is what to do about graphics cards. I assume that it will need to have a high-def output - does anyone have any recommendations? Finally, I plan to run Ubuntu Linux on this - is this a good idea or a bad one? Are there any distros specifically designed for media servers/pcs.
