Hey guys,

I'm hoping someone can help as I'm all out of ideas :(

I got a second hand 3770k from the auction site as a cheapish upgrade from my 3570k.

I just can't overclock it.

Specs -

Gigabyte z77 d3h
8 GB Samsung Green RAM -1600 mhz.
780 GTX
2 SSD's
old 320 GB hdd.

I had the 3570k at 4.2 for years with no problems.

I reset the bios, took out the 3570k and put the 3770k in. It booted fine, but when I try and OC (make any changes to the multiplier) it just ends up in a constant boot loop and it fails to load the bios. I have to disconnect the power and hit the power button a few times, reconnect the power and I get a bios screen saying overclocking has failed.

I've tried flashing the bios to the latest version (F23a) from the one I was using (F22) and then back to the F21 bios. None of them work. I've taken the battery out and got the message saying that it's been reset.

It's definitely the 3770k. Bios reports it correctly, as does windows and CPUz. I've not changed anything other than the CPU.

Any ideas? I've spent most of the weekend searching google, but with no joy :(

Maybe that's a reason someone sold it? They could've OC it too much that it doesn't play OC any longer.

I collected it in person, asked the guy if it had been overclocked, he said it hadn't. He didn't use it for gaming and said it was fast enough for what he needed.

Even changing the multiplier from 35 to 36 doesn't work.

Well if possible, test this CPU in different PC. Even go to local IT services or shop and see if they can help you get some OC on it.
PS: Guy could've lied to you. Not brand new = it could've been used even for scratching lottery scratch cards.
What PSU are you using?

I don't have another PC, and I'm in the middle of nowhere.

I appreciate he could have lied to me, but he said as he'd never Oc'd it he'd like to know how high I can get it.

PSU is a corsair 750cx which is only about 6 months old as the last one packed up. I had no problems with overclocking the 3570k.

Two things.

1. It's unrelated to your BIOS issue, but if you put in a different CPU, I would expect to reinstall windows as the HAL's will be different.
2. This is what I'd do. Bump the multiplier by just 1 and set vcore to 1.25v. This is to see if it's voltage related. That should be OK to get you in to windows. Test it from there as you start OC'ing.

I did consider reinstalling windows, but as it wasn't even making it to the bios I didn't think it would make much difference. Maybe I'll try that this evening.

I'll try number 2 first.

I was thinking that it must be a setting in the bios somewhere that's causing it, but I can't seem to find anything that maybe causing the issue.

Appreciate the reply :)

Well, I got home turned the PC on and went into the bios and set the multiplier to 36 and it booted into windows no problem. Tried 37, same thing, 38, same thing, 40 same!

Now running prime at 4.4 :)

Random. No idea what the issue was, but it seems to be working now.

Thanks :)
