Help, can't use keyboard in some fields!

This is happening on my parents laptop (less than 1 year old) and I've tried to troubleshoot via teamviewer but without luck.
Basically on 2 sites they can't input text with keyboard (one is the bank username, the other one is on a different site after a login screen).
We've also seen that they can't input text on the 2nd login page for my internet banking login.
Via teamviewer I can input text ok.
The laptop has 8.1 and was set not to update (I'm since updating it but no change so far).
Firefox did auto update a few weeks before this started happening, but I've rolled back to previous version and the issue is still here.
The issue is also here on chrome and IE.
It doesn't seem to happen on any other programs but they only ever use firefox really.

I'm thinking it can't be hardware as it would happen all the time.
I'm really at a loss as to what to check next and I can't be login in for them everyday!!

My parents aren't computer literate so if you think I've missed any stupid checks please do let me know.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
 
As it's banking sites first thing I'd suspect is keylogger/malware.
I presume you've run AV and spyware scans?
 
I haven't yet as windows was set not to update, defender didn't update.
I'm not sure if it runs background scans.
It's almost finished updating so I'll try soon.

She did install something maybe a month ago, one of those crapware that change your search engine etc, I didn't think much of it but maybe.
