Bought the boys a 4gb version for xmas and it seems it may be up the spout already. It is coming on but when a disk is put in the motor does not seem to be reading and it just says 'open tray'.

Tried having the disk in both prior to start up and after and the result is still the same. I think they may have left it on all day during the week, would this have caused an issue? probably 6-7 hours, would it have burned the motor out?

Before i attempt to get a replacement from where i bought it from or email microsoft do you think there is an easy fix for this?
 
Take it back and ask for a replacement. Any fix would likely void your warranty, and there's no point doing that when you're only a month in.
