Hi..

Used to build PC's years ago but got busy doing other things... Consequently, I now don't know my asus from my elbow and am utterly befuddled by all the new spec processors and motherboards.
Had an Intel P4SGE motherboard with a P4 2.7Gb processor (state of the art when I built it), but I think the PCI bus has blown as I cant use any cards, including the agp port, anymore.. Have just about got it going enough to get on the net to beg advice from all you up-to-date techies about what to do next..

Seems a replacement board is still going for about £180 these days, but I note that there are many dual core bundles selling for about the same price! Can anyone recommend a board and processor that will feel like a decent upgrade to my old setup?
Will really appreciate advice as my head is starting to spin trying to look at all the reviews of the kit that has come out over the last few years.. Oh, and happy new year!!

Steve..

what does the MB need

apg slot?

number of IDE ports?

also anything else you want to salvage from your current system?

yeah agree with df1986, thats a good starting point, but tbh youre prob gonna need a whole new system, RAM and gfx card too at least - nothing uses agp anymore, all pci-e
RAM is quite cheap at moment anyway and it'll depend on your budget/needs as to what gfx card to get

Thanks for the advice... Think I did not highlight the most important factor which is 'cheap'.. this could not have happened at a worst moment as I really cant afford to rebuild an entire system...

Have 2Gb of ddr333 ram, a nvidia 4400 titanium agp, several pci cards (expensive soundcards etc) which I dont want to lose if poss..

ideally i would like to keep everything i have in my system as it was all very expensive and top notch (at the time).. Will need at least 4 pci slots, more if i have to get a pci graphics card to replace my agp...

hope this helps...

You're going to struggle to get hold of a board that meets your needs, there is this one which does AGP but doesnt have all youe PCI slots, your best bet might be 2nd hand

thanks everyone... going to go with matt26lfc's suggestion as that is within budget and has enough pci slots.. appreciate all the advice..

bye..
