Help choosing a DVD player

Im looking to buy a new DVD player but Im a bit lost with all the choice out there!!!

I want a good player, maybe even the best I can get my grubby little hands on lol.
Id like it to play just about any style of DVD/CD as well as record to a built in hard disk so i dnt have to miss my favorite TV programs when im alway on holiday. Also if possible id like it to give high definition equivalent picture quality for my new LCD TV

Hope im not asking far to much from a dvd player here

Any help will be appreciated as long as its constructive

Pioneer DVR540HX that should cover most of what your after unless u need a hdmi connection

I think the TV does have an HDMI connection in the back yes
